Aoga Amata Early Childhood Education Teacher Training

Programme Outline

This two-year NZQA approved and accredited sub-degree programme was developed by Fereni Ete and other ECE educators. Based on original Aoga Amata concepts and practices, the programme reflects Samoan and Pasifika culture, values and aspirations, and is grounded in early childhood education theory and practice.

The aims of this programme are:

  • to prepare Samoan language speakers to become effective practitioners in early childhood settings, especially within centres that are characterised as Samoan or Pasifika, or that have significant numbers of Samoan/Pasifika-speaking children, and
  • to develop computer, study and English literacy skills, so the graduate is better prepared for successful study at higher Diploma and University degree levels.

Tusi Pasi o Aoga Amata Certificate in Early Childhood Education - L3

Aoga Amata i Aotearoa Diploma in Early Childhood Education - L4

Programme Structure

  • Two-year full time course
  • 4 terms per year
  • 47 weeks per year (4 weeks organised break inclusive)
  • Each week is 3 days of classes, plus 1 day of on-site practicum and 1 day of supported study
  • Year One: Tusi Pasi o Aoga Amata Certificate in Early Childhood Education - Level 3
  • Year Two: Aoga Amata i Aotearoa Diploma in Early Childhood Education - Level 4

Monday to Friday
9.30 am to 3:30 pm
(includes classes, fieldwork practicum and supported study time)

Pathway after successful completion of the training programme

Student may be eligible for entry to Victoria University of Wellington Early Childhood Education programmes with cross-credits.

Application Criteria

To confirm eligibility, please make an appointment to discuss enrolment and pre-assessment. English and Samoan languages and other criteria may apply.

Admission to PTI Aoga Amata ECE programme requires meeting set academic criteria; having supportive referees, making declarations about any criminal convictions and health and disability issues and successfully taking part in an assessment exercise, if required.
