New Zealand Diploma in Business

Programme Outline

The New Zealand Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) at Pacific Training Institute (PTI) is a level 6 nationally-recognised qualification that allows students to gain a broad range of skills and knowledge for business and management.

Within the 20-month programme, academic writing, research, computing, literacy and study skills are also covered.

A graduate of the New Zealand Diploma in Business at PTI is able to apply important business, interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills in decision making; and can appreciate the ethical and cultural issues that arise in business whilst working independently and within diverse teams.

  • 400 Accounting Principles
    Provides an understanding of financial statements and reports and develops business performance analysis.
  • 435 Fundamentals of Small Business
    Develops knowledge of techniques, processes, options and analysis relating to small business operation.
  • 510 Introduction to Commercial Law
    Provides a basic knowledge of NZ commercial law and an understanding of the rationale of legal reasoning.
  • 520 Economic Environment
    Applies elements of economic theory to contemporary issues.
  • 530 Organization and Management
    An introductory study of management and the organisational context within which management is performed.  
  • 541 The Fundamentals of Marketing
    Develops knowledge and understanding of marketing principles for application to enterprise activities.
  • 550 Business Computing
    Provides working knowledge of business environment information technology and develops business application skills.
  • 560 Business Communication
    Develops in the modern workplace context, an understanding of communication theory, functions, skills and technology.
  • 620 Managerial Economics
    Develops skills applying economic concepts to business decision-making for both the private and public sectors.
  • 630 Leadership
    Introduces business leadership principles, techniques, and processes, and develops thinking and reflection processes.
  • 636 Applied Management
    Develops competency with the application of management principles. This involves active participation in teams and business projects.
  • 650 Applied Computing
    Students will use software applications in developing computer-based solutions for business problems.

Pathways after NZDipBus

PTI graduates usually gain employment in business or management-related fields or staircase to further degree level study at University with cross-credits.

For the holder of a NZDipBus wishing to credit transfer to a degree, many NZ universities offer exemptions from the first year of a business degree.

Eligibility Criteria

Students under 20 years of age need:

  • a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework; and
  • fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori; 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards. Students over 20 years of age need to be pre-assessed for writing, listening, oral communication and working with others.

International students for whom English is a second language must also have an IELTS score of 6.0 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.5 or a TOEFL score of 550

Students who complete the PTI Diploma in Business need to complete four 600 level papers to complete the NZ Diploma in Business.

Programme Length

Total: 20 months including 8 weeks of term breaks

Time Commitment

Study part-time or full-time.

Full-time requires a commitment of 40-50 hours per week including lectures, self-study, research and assignment work.
