PTI Diploma in Business

Programme Outline

The PTI Diploma in Business is a 13 month sub-degree programme developed by our Department of Business Studies and approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

This Diploma is designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and competence to both undertake a broad range of business activities, and to carry out a variety of specialized operations required in supervisory positions in a business.

The PTI Diploma in Business is exciting and challenging study consisting of a broad range of subjects and papers. Within the programme, academic writing and study skills areas are covered. Mastering these important study skills will help you on the path to graduation and further successful tertiary study.

Programme Content

  • 400 Accounting Principles
    Provides an understanding of financial statements and reports and develops business performance analysis.
  • 435 Fundamentals of Small Business
    Develops knowledge of techniques, processes, options and analysis relating to small business operation.
  • 510 Introduction to Commercial Law
    Provides a basic knowledge of NZ commercial law and an understanding of the rationale of legal reasoning.
  • 520 The Economic Environment
    Applies elements of economic theory to contemporary issues.
  • 530 Organization and Management
    An introductory study of management and the organisational context within which management is performed.
  • 541 The Fundamentals of Marketing
    Develops knowledge and understanding of marketing principles for application to enterprise activities.
  • 550 Business Computing
    Provides working knowledge of business environment information technology and develops business application skills.
  • 560 Business Communication
    Develops in the modern workplace context, an understanding of communication theory, functions, skills and technology.

Pathways after PTI Diploma

On successful completion of the PTI Diploma in Business, students may be eligible for entry with cross credits and exemptions to Victoria University of Wellington's Bachelor of Commerce and Administration programme.

Graduates may also cross-credit all 8 papers towards a New Zealand Diploma in Business that is also taught at PTI, and apply to enter, at the second year level, any New Zealand University Business degree programme.

Application Criteria

The PTI Diploma in Business can be undertaken by:

Students under 20 years of age need:

  • a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework; and
  • fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori; 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards. Students over 20 years of age need to be pre-assessed for writing, listening, oral communication and working with others.

International students for whom English is a second language must also have an IELTS score of 6.0 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.5 or a TOEFL score of 550

Note: applicants who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents may be eligible for zero tuition fee for 2011 (first 6 places).
